Everyman

This script's main character is JOHN SMITH whose draw is that he is entirely lacking character. The title is of course Everyman. I know that sounds entirely too straight forward, but the ironic part is... wait no- no never mind. Wait. I somehow totally missed that this query is apparently describing a comedy (High Concept Comedy, rather). Maybe that's the irony- wait what's irony again? Well- as you know- we all just want a movie with a guy we all can relate to. And originality. Or a remake.

"A corporation makes millions exploiting the uncannily average and blissfully unaware John Smith -- until greed, corruption and government operatives threaten to kill the golden goose."

Genre: High Concept Comedy/Drama

Monolith Megacorp goes to great lengths to secretly obtain the valuable opinions of the unbelievably ordinary John Smith. John's brother-in-law -- naive young businessman Parker Bennett -- risks the blossoming relationship with his executive assistant Valerie by agreeing to lead the unusual surveillance team. Behind Parker's back, executives sabotage John's personal life in a misguided effort to make him even more average. When the government finds out about John's alleged abilities and practically kidnaps him, Parker and his associates must help John hatch an escape plan.

"Everyman", which has been compared to THE TRUMAN SHOW with a side of OFFICE SPACE, recently won 2nd place in both the Story Pros 3rd Annual International Screenplay Contest and the 2009 Movie Deal Screenplay Contest, where it also won the comedy category.

I would like to submit this screenplay for your consideration and can be contacted as listed below.

Thank you for your time and attention.

  1. Imagine my surprise when I found my query on your blog!

I happen to agree that it's a little muddled and doesn't sell the concept well. I've revised the logline since.

I've re-written the screenplay itself substantially too - although the main conceit has not changed. It's not so much that John Smith "lacks character", but that he is so average the corporation saves millions in market research by utilizing his opinions instead.

His brother-in-law Parker is really a co-lead, at first working for the "bad guys" in the corporation, then when it goes too far (and new "bad guys" - government agents - emerge) he has help get John out of the predicament he helped cause.

I'm waiting on the results a few more contests, and I have a bunch of (revised) queries out there, so we'll see what happens...
